Amazon pairs its robotics expansion with investment in worker skills.
Amazon announced European robotics investment alongside a global training commitment. Its next Proteus generation adds conversational instructions, but remains a lab pilot with European deployment planned for early 2027 operations.
At its June 2026 Delivering the Future event, Amazon announced more than €10 billion for expanding and modernising European fulfilment centres and a $1 billion global commitment to Career Choice by 2030. The company also described further deployment plans for several robotics systems.
Its next-generation Proteus is designed to receive conversational text instructions and move loads more widely around a facility. Amazon says this version is being piloted in its labs, with European deployment planned for the first half of 2027. It should therefore be treated as a development example rather than an off-the-shelf procurement option.
Our view: pairing technology investment with training is the right principle. The test is whether workers can access training during realistic schedules and progress into worthwhile roles. Organisations should publish their own measures of participation, progression, workload and job quality alongside the usual robotics measures of speed and throughput.
